Romany Opera shown in Hungarian Theatre 15. 11. 2005
The Belvaroszi Szinhász will show a performance of Romany Legend -
Romany Rock Opera written by Sir Gusztáv Varga, a Romany musician and
director of the famous Hungarian Roma music band Kalyi Jag band and the
Romany cultural association.

Concert Against neo-Nazism in Bratislava 15. 11. 2005
RSK: “Stop Neo-Nazis” was the title of a huge concert organized in
Bratislava on the 12th of November to commemorate the brutal murder of a
university student, who was killed by neo-Nazis last week. Slovak and
Roma bands and many public personalities participated in the event,
which was held at the scene of the crime. Last week, neo-Nazis stabbed
and murdered university student Daniel Tupy on the bank of the Danube
because he had long hair.

Two Slovak police officials dissmissed due to skinhead attacks 16. 11.
2005
Interior Minister Vladimir Palko sacked two police officers because they
failed to ensure sufficient order and take resolute police action after
the last wave of neo-Nazis attacks that have broken out lately in
several places in Slovakia. The tense situation started with an attack
on October 31st where an organized group of neo – Nazis attacked and
stabbed two boys, supporters of punk music. It culminated into a cruel
murder of 21 year old philosophy student Daniel Tupy who was most likely
killed by a group of skinheads on November 4th. The last skinhead attack
was reported from Piestany last weekend.

Attacks against Roma in the Czech Republic and Slovakia 21. 11. 2005
Unprovoked aggression against Roma has occurred this past week in both
the Czech Republic and Slovakia. On Saturday the 20th of November in
Horovice, Czech Republic a Roma man, Miroslav Mezey was cutting wood in
a nearby forest. While cutting wood, two non-Roma individuals started
photographing Mezey, suspecting that he was illegally taking the wood.
Mezey questioned the two non-Roma individuals as to why they were
photographing him.

Radio Rota: A Showcase of Romany Music and Culture 21. 11. 2005
The first ever Romany Internet Radio celebrated its third birthday last
week. On November 18th 2002 Radio Rota started to broadcast on
www.radiorota.cz as an attempt to provide Roma with a place to speak, to
listen to Romany music and to discuss Romany issues.

Czech Republic: Museum of Roma Culture opens part of its exposition 30.
11. 2005
Museum of Roma Culture located in Brno, the second biggest city in the
Czech Republic, is opening the first part of its constant exhibition.
The newly-opened part of the permanent exhibition comprises two rooms
out of the total of six exhibition rooms. Two rooms – No. 5 and No. 6 -
will be opened tomorrow under auspices of Czech ombudsman Otakar Motejl.
They will show ‘Story of Roma’ in the Czech Republic since 1945 till
today.

Another Roma settlement in danger of being fenced in Slovakia 30. 11.
2005
Roma press agency Slovakia (RPA) released a report that the local
council of Slovak village Nizna Mysla in the district of Kosice wants to
build fencing surrounding Roma settlement. Around 15 shanty houses have
arisen in the neighbourhood of three housing units that had been built
for Roma citizens by the village council in 1989. The shanties are
occupied by young families with children. Up to fifteen people are
estimated to share one house.

Discriminatory Documentary released in Belarus 29. 11. 2005
Nicolas Kalinin, a Roma ctivist and the Head of the Belarussian Roma
Lawyers Group and chairman of the Belarus Roma Organization Ekhipe
(Unity) informed Dzeno Association about a biased documentary movie
entitled “Without a limitation period: The Roma Camp is going to Prison”
that was broadcasted on a Belarussian TV Channel ONT this month.

Paroubek criticises Karasek over pig farm in Lety 29. 11. 2005
PRAGUE/LONDON – Prime Minister Jiri Paroubek today criticised government
human rights commissioner Svatopluk Karasek over the possibility of
buying the pig farm in Lety, south Bohemia, where the Nazis built an
internment camp for Romanies during World War Two.

Sharing the Memories of Roma Holocaust Survivors 9. 12. 2005
On November 7, 2005 the Czech book (Ne)boli ((No)pain), about the
memories of WWII Roma Holocaust survivors, was released. The book pulls
together the oral histories of Roma Holocaust survivors about their
lives during the war and post-war. Some of the survivors whose
experiences are documented in the book joined the official launch in
Prague at Krasne Ztraty coffeeshop.

U. S. Embassy in Prague awarded activist of Indian origin for his work
with Roma 9. 12. 2005
On the occasion of the 57th anniversary of International Human Rights
Day (December 10) the U.S. Ambassador to the Czech Republic William J.
Cabaniss presented the Alice Garrigue Masaryk Award to activist Sri
Kumar Vishwanathan, the creator of the Common Life program, on Thursday,
December 8 at the Ambassador’s Residence in Prague.

Gender lens on gypsies 9. 12. 2005
She calls herself “a full-time Roma smart-ass”; not an easy job, she
says. Enisa Eminova, a Macedonian Roma, is a consultant to the Roma
Women’s Initiative – founded in 1999 by the New York based Open Society
Institute’s Network Women’s Programme. The Roma Women’s Initiative works
to develop, link and catalyse a core group of committed Roma women’s
leaders in an effort to improve the human rights of Roma women in
Central and Eastern Europe.
